Math Sorts

This week in math, my kindergarten QT's are working on sorting blocks by color.  We also sorted this week by size and shape.  They worked independently and in small groups on the carpet.

We survived the first week!

We are beginning kindergarten, a new adventure, and we survived!  We are working on routines, rules and procedures, making new friends, and getting along.  We are learning songs, how to hold scissors and cut, how to write our names (and for some, how to hold a pencil!)  It has been an exciting week with only a couple of friends with tears!  Our biggest challenge is sharing our room for 40 minutes every day with our friends in the afternoon kindergarten class (a whooping 58 children total!) Management and holding their attention is a bit of a challenge, but we are making it work! Ask your child what their favorite part of the day was and what the rules are.  Get lots of rest this weekend! Cheers!

Back to School!

Tomorrow is the first day back to school!  I can't wait!   What are you looking forward to most about school?  I love learning poems, singing songs and reading new books!

Kindergarten Orientation

We just had our kindergarten orientation...a bit overwhelming, I must say!  The line for signing in never seemed to end.  We have A LOT of children!  It is exciting to see so many kids that are so happy to be starting school!  We had a few criers...but that usually tapers off after the first week.  We hope to have answered any burning questions, but please just jot me a note or send me an email with any questions or concerns you have.  I am looking forward to a great year with your child and a collaborative partnership with you, the parent.

How Do You Fit It All In?

I'm taking a short break from blog stalking...I can't help myself!  I absolutely looove seeing what other teachers around the nation are doing, but I can't help but wonder...HOW DO YOU FIT IT ALL IN?  No, I don't mean into your day, what I mean is where do you find the time to create all that you do, to take pictures of your stuff, to post it, to read professional books, to read for pleasure, to enjoy your family, to clean your house and accomplish other home projects (NOT the school ones) and just have A LIFE?!

I mean I have 2 weeks left of my SUMMER VACATION and I have spent countless hours working on school stuff, surfing other teacher blogs and websites, and trying to be more organized.  I just can't figure how to get everything done that I want to and still feel like I'm rested and rejuvenated for another year of school.  What's your secret? I'd love to know!

School's Out! Oh, what to do?

Our last day of kindergarten was last Friday. I am ready for a break, but can't keep my mind off school. I have so many lists of things to do: things to do at home, shopping lists, things to print off, things to copy, books to read. After months of "blog stalking", I really want to try to get my own blog off the ground, too, this summer. I am amazed and inspired by so many bloggers out in cyberspace.

I am not inventive or creative in any sense of the word, but get so many ideas from other teachers, both at my school site and on the internet. One recent idea I got from Kinder Corner was for a Father's Day gift. I took a picture of each child wearing a fedora and my husband's shirt and tie. I printed them in black and white and put it in a card from the child. The student's drew a picture of their dad on white paper on the front and we put a copy of a Father's Day poem on the inside. Simple and easy!
